On episode 87 Don and Offie are joined by Elijah AKA PNW Nils of Upper Left. Continuing the conversation started last week the trio dig into deep and thought provoking conversation about the way social media being used in the last few weeks and what and individuals responsibility is to speak publicly, Dons recent journey of learning and relearning about figures like Malcom X and The Black Panther Party and how inadequate school education on these subjects can be. The social stigma that exists around guns, and how that leads to a fundamental misunderstanding of the second amendment which has hindered the ability of people, young black men in particular, to safely express their second amendment rights to protect themselves. The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), their goals and demands, the voices being heard from CHAZ, as well as the truth and lies being reported within and about the zone. The importance of words and definitions in conversation and in slogans (defund the police, BLM), a larger picture at hand regarding the erosion of the fundamental rights inshrined in The Bill of Rights and how race is potentially being used as a distraction from this issue. Potential steps forward in the form of restructuring and reform of the police and community involvement and how daily interactions with the police and an eternal power struggle with authority can hinder that progression and legislation being proposed federally. Wrapping up with the way the COVID shut down affected NILS, and insight into the process, inspiration and future projects to come for PNW NILS and Upper Left as a whole.
